Visiting Otaru Canal today

  • What it is: A gently curving canal completed in 1923 and lined with old stone warehouses now used as restaurants and shops. Part of it was filled in 1986 to make a promenade with 63 gas lamps.
  • Getting there: About 35 minutes by JR train from Sapporo to Otaru Station, then about 10 minutes on foot to the canal.
  • Hours: Open at all times. The promenade gas lamps are lit from sunset to midnight; the warehouse illumination runs from sunset to 22:30.
  • Admission: Free
  • Tip: Come at dusk, when the gas lamps come on. During the Otaru Snow Light Path festival in February the lamps are lit from 15:00.
