  • What it is: A hillside port town of lanes, cats and old temples above the Onomichi Channel. The Temple Walk links some 25 temples, including Senko-ji with its town-wide view.
  • Getting there: From JR Onomichi Station, walk east along the shopping arcades; the Senko-ji Ropeway lower station is a short bus hop or about 15 minutes on foot.
  • Hours: Streets open any time. Temple halls and the ropeway run in the daytime; check times locally.
  • Admission: Walking the lanes and most temple grounds is free; the ropeway is paid.
  • Tip: Ride the 3-minute ropeway up to Senko-ji Park and walk down via the Path of Literature, Senko-ji and Jodo-ji. Allow about four hours for the full course.
