Visiting Ouchi-juku today

  • What it is: A preserved Edo-period post town on an old road to Nikko, with a long, wide street of thatched-roof houses now run as shops and soba restaurants.
  • Getting there: From Yunokami-Onsen Station on the Aizu Railway, about 10 minutes by taxi (about ¥2,000 one way). A seasonal shared bus, the Saruyu-go, also runs.
  • Hours: The street is open at all times; shops keep their own hours and several stay open in winter.
  • Admission: Free
  • Tip: Climb the steps at the far end of the street for the classic view down the rooftops. Try negi soba, eaten with a leek instead of chopsticks.
