Visiting Oirase Gorge today

  • What it is: A 14 km mountain stream flowing out of Lake Towada through thick forest, with many waterfalls and a riverside walking path. It is a national scenic place and natural monument.
  • Getting there: JR Bus Mizuumi-go from JR Aomori Station to Yakeyama, about 2 hours, then 5 minutes on foot. The Oirase-go runs from Hachinohe. Buses stop from mid-November to mid-April.
  • Hours: Open at all times. The Oirase Stream Museum at the entrance is open 9:00–16:00.
  • Admission: Free
  • Tip: Walk downhill with the flow and use the bus to return. Bikes can be rented (¥1,000 for 4 hours) at the Stream Museum and other points.
