Visiting Aomori Nebuta Matsuri today

  • What it is: A summer festival where huge illuminated paper floats of warriors and gods are paraded through Aomori, with drummers and dancing haneto. The 2026 festival ran 2–7 August.
  • When: 2026: parades nightly 2–6 August (from 18:45–19:00), a daytime parade on 7 August from 13:00, then the sea parade and fireworks that evening. 2027 dates are not yet announced.
  • Where: Streets of central Aomori near JR Aomori Station; the 7 August finale is at Aomori Port.
  • Watching: Watching from the roadside is free. Paid reserved seats are sold in advance through the official site.
  • Tip: Anyone in a proper haneto costume can join the dancing. Hotels in the city fill early; many visitors stay in Hirosaki or Hachinohe.
