The first torii, at the entrance to the Geku.

Visitors to Ise traditionally go to the Geku, the Outer Shrine, first and then on to the Naiku. So that is what I did on a hot day at the start of August.

The Geku is dedicated to Toyouke, the goddess of food and harvest. It sits in a forest of huge cedar trees, and the plain wooden buildings feel very calm after the town outside.

Heading on to the Naiku.

From here I went on to the Naiku, the Inner Shrine, which I wrote about in Ise Jingu Naiku.

I took these photos in August 2010 and only got round to posting them in 2026.
