About shibuya246
Welcome to Shibuya246.com, bringing you the latest news on products and trends from Japan.
Living and working in Shibuya for 20 years this city within the city of Tokyo is always surprising me with shops, trends and new places to visit. I hope to introduce you to many of those new and some of the old great places in Shibuya as well as touching on other Japanese related topics.
Interests
As well I am interested in Japanese animation, movies, music and character goods, so you should find plenty of those tucked away in the site. In particular, you will probably see a variety of posts on Rilakkuma, Doraemon and the many trips made to the convenience store to check out what latest trendiest snacks and drinks are available.

Experience
I have worked and lived in Japan for over 20 years. I started out with a publishing company where I established and managed their office in Japan. I also was Editor in Chief of Japan Management Review during that time. Later, I ran my own consultancy business before branching out into web businesses about 10 years ago.
After 4 years, I took a break from the web and the consultancy business scene and got involved with venture capital investment groups in Japan, which among many investments included purchasing golf courses, acquiring REIT businesses and running stock exchange listed companies. Following this, I spent a short-time in Australia working for a public finance company and creating an online financial market exchange.
Meetings
Over the years, through work, I have had the chance to meet with some very interesting people. Sumo wrestlers, baseball players, actors and actresses, Prime-ministers of Japan as well as CEO’s of large corporations. Some of the most interesting people I have met though have been on the web, and it is to that media that I decided to return my focus.
Back to basics
Deciding the web was the best way to communicate with the world at large I have now returned to running my own web consultancy and social media promotions business.
I have programming experience in a number of languages suitable for web development including ASP.NET and PHP. One of the recent web projects I developed listed over a billion dollars worth of finance loans in a 12 month period.
In addition to web projects, we are also keen to help companies who are looking to learn about and “break into” the Japanese marketplace.
Who is shibuya246?
My name is Alan. I was originally born in England and spent my high school years in Australia. I have been living and working in Japan for over 20 years, mainly in the Shibuya area.

I chose the name Shibuya246.com because for one I have lived and worked in Shibuya for over 20 years and feel very much at home in Shibuya. Secondly I chose the 246 number because passing through Shibuya stretching up through Omotesando is Route 246, one of the main roads in Tokyo. Most people have heard of Route 246 and associate it with Shibuya.

Japan Photo Articles
A lot of the blog posts I write have photos which I have taken in Japan. I started out the blog using a Canon G10 Powershot camera and changed up to a Nikon D700 recently. I have tried out a few lenses and seem to be turning into a lens collector at the moment.
I also use an iPhone for Tokyo Live Blogging, hosted at dannychoo.com
You will probably see a mixture of different types of photos on the site ranging from the iPhone point, shoot and hope up to the D700. Sometimes the iPhone can really surprise me with a great shot, but normally the Nikon will win out.

I know that the girls day ceremony is coming up soon in Japan. Can I put in a request to see some photos of the girls day ceremony – the dolls or the food that is eaten in Japan around this time? What kind of price are you looking at to purchase these dolls in Aussie dollars? How long should they be displayed?
Love your story… it's nice to read how people go through the years, constantly searching and finally finding something they really like. One of the reasons why I ended up reading your blog is that I really liked your story. 20 years – that's a long time. I hope the day I end up in Japan would come sooner ^^
Thanks Ragnar. Great to hear from you. I hope you keep reading and eventually make it to Japan. Good luck.
So sorry to hear about Japan Soc. And now you have taken on a new job to help them out. I don't have much experience but will help out. Let me know if i can help.

I really like your blog. I found it through Japanesepod101 website. I went to Japan for 2 weeks in October this year and liked it so much that I have booked to go back in April 2010 with my son. It isn’t the cheapest place to go to from New Zealand but I am obsessed with Japan now. Everyone is teasing me. It’s great to see your photos. Regards Kelea
Hi Alan,
@shibuya246 Hay all of you at Shibuya, have a wonderful Christmas and have a very Happy New Year. Thanks for the Christmas Email it help me get my account straightened out and now I can get into it for the first time …. Crysta
I was trying to put this to put this on twitter for you but it would not take. I tryed installing the current WordPress software and it caused my laptop to go a little buggy, the curser started jumpimp into process mode with no explaination and the install was less then satisfactory and successful. The only reason I am telling you this is when I clicked on my name to try to sort out Twitter comments “above”, the very same thing started happening until I got back here, then it stopped. Is anything I should be a where with the WordPress sites or WordPress it self? Software?
Thank You from Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Crysta
Thanks and Merry Xmas. Nice to see your comments. Looks like your Twitter profile is connected ok. Were you installing Wordpress for your own blog? You don’t need install anything (apart from an internet browser) to read the blogs. Let me know if I can help you out if you have problems with your blog install. What Browser are you using? Internet Explorer? Firefox? Do you know the version number? IE6 can be very difficult.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your concerns in December, they seemed to have straightened themselves out, and I have learned allot more since then. Good to see your activity, in time I will have more time to follow closer. A lady that comes into help me has a teenage daughter that really enjoys your site and learning about Japan. She goes to school with Japanese children which encourages the interest.
I use Opera browsers almost exclusively, though I do have an up to date IE8 all running on Windows 7 Ultimate OS or my SE cellpone. That should answer your questions from December. If you want to dialog PM send me an Email, I would be more that happy to go further.
See ya,
Crysta
Your site is totally rocking! I love the photo of the Tokyo Tower in the Honda window. That’s brilliant!
Thank you. so glad you like it. I was just checking out http://tune-in-tokyo.com via http://bloglinkjapan.com as well. I have been keeping an eye on your discussion of camera lenses. very good info.
hmmm… I have seen you at the crosswalk before methinks
That is quite possible
Hi Alan, I was wondering if you could e-mail me, I have an offer for you.
Hoping to hear more from you.
Love you website, keep up the good work.
thanks
I emailed back. Look forward to hearing from you. If you didnt get it my email is blog@shibuya246.com
Hi Alan,
But I have another reason I’m emailing.
First I want to say this site is great! I lived in Tokyo for three years and seeing the images are making me nostalgic.
Currently I’m an art student studying graphic design. I’m working on a project in which I have to make a book about an international destination. I decided to do Shibuya since I spent a lot of time hanging out there. The book will cover fashion, museums, music, nightlife and a mini section Harajuku/Yoyogi Park. The book is pretty short. I wanted to know if I could use some of your images for my book? It’s not a book that will be published, it’s just going to be added to my portfolio for class. I would credit your site as I’m doing with other sites I’m using (eg Mixi, Japan-guide, Wiki, etc.) The camera I had in Japan were crappy and I want to get a good grade on my project.
I don’t know if I’d be able to send you a copy of the book once it’s completed (I have to bind it myself), but I’d be glad to send you a PDF file of it once it’s done.
Thanks!
sure, you may all the pictures with a credit line to shibuya246. My Site is about sharing so go for it. You can get most pictures of my flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/shibuya246 (most pixs are 960px wide which should give you decent quality for printing.) Look forward to seeing your pdf some time when you finish. maybe I can feature it on the Site
