Tojinbo Cliffs

  Oct 25th, 2010

The Tojinbo Cliffs are a natural collection of jagged rock faces about 30 meters tall. A popular sightseeing spot, there are also many regular suicides here (it is said to have the highest rate of suicides with about 25 per year).

Lots of people took a look over the edge. I was happier to stay back at a safe distance and watch the watchers

The scenery looked a little desolate, although the weather was not the best. Maybe on a sunny day things look better

Notice the absence of any railings here to stop people accidentally falling over the edge

The boat tour takes you inside the small inlet. Better hope nobody is jumping off the top when your boat is down there

There were lots of people walking around in high heels. I was surprised no one fell over on the rocks, or worse still over the edge. Just watching other people running around near the edge was scary enough for me.

Are you afraid of heights?

  1. I am incredibly bad with heights, so I don’t know if I could handle that experience. What is it about our screwed up human brains that causes that split-second desire to hurl ourselves off a precipice??

Those are some Lord of the Rings rock formations – very spooky place, especially considering the tainted associations. Kudos to you for getting as close as you did!

  2. Funny how these streets are always lined with shops eager to sell you stuff.

  3. Would love to be out on the water watching sunset on this boat.

  4. Love the view of the ocean from places like this. I can imagine sitting on the rocks during sunrises or sunsets.

  5. That is a great view you had there.
And I appreciate your efforts for getting so dangerous shots :)
I am a bit afraid of heights myself. If I look down my brain keeps telling me “it’s dangerous”.
But on the other hand it is an awesome view you get if you are brave enough.

  6. The heights would definitely give me the creeps, but the scenery is amazing. The coastline in the Netherlands is just beach and walls, nothing as spectacular and steep as these cliffs, aside from some man-made water defenses.
