  • Thanks. By a “thing to do”, I was thinking of it like “lets go shopping” or “lets see a movie” or “how about a cup of tea”. It has not got there yet, but these girls were obviously bonding as friends through their shared joy of taking photos with their phones. I could imagine them comparing notes later in a cafe just like they might otherwise check purchases made at a store when shopping together.

    I don’t think it is “the thing to do”, but more “a thing to do”. Not sure anyone would say “Lets go take some photos together with our mobiles”, but it has almost got to that sort of stage. ? 🙂

  That is a right smart looking tree, must have taken a long time to put that one together. There’s 9 santas in each section, from my guess that’s alot of santas. In some of your pictures images and background is blurry, which camera did you take these with? It was the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. great article. hope I didn’t mess it up 🙁 ?

  • no money, but plenty of enjoyable family time, no doubt. You can look back on this later and probably get a few smiles or laughs out of it. Might even become “the good old times”.

    Christmas Day in Japan is normally a regular work day. Nothing special. Christmas Eve on the other hand …… special for those couples who are hooking up at this festive time of the year in Japan.

    I took these with the Nikon D700. Like lithiumangel said, it was the 85mm lens starting at f/1.4 and moving up to around 4.0 from memory. I am still trying to understand how to use the fast lenses. Some shots come out good, others I just get a blurrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Hope you guys like a lot lot of bokeh and blur. 😉

    I have to check the answer on the santas. I asked the other day and was told the correct number. Now I forgot what the answer was ^_^.

  That’s a really creative christmas tree ! It’s very original. I have never heard of Tokyo midtown before ? It looks like an underground shopping place. Could it by any chance be the place you get to when you go down a really long escalator that’s infront of Roppongi Hills ? If so than I stopped by for a sec but since all the stores in that area have ridiculous prices I didn’t feel like venturing and went back upstairs to take some illlumination shots 😛

  My country uses regular trees, the larger ones at central places on the street with lights; aside from that many christmas stalls are out in these little pre-fab wooden huts (looking all cute) selling various things. Tough it doesn’t look nearly as interesting as everything thats going around in Tokyo right now.

  • There are a lot of shops and restaurants in the basement as well and also shops aboveground. The xmas tree is on the ground floor. This is all in the new Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi which is separate to the Roppongi Hills area. I find the Roppongi Hills structure to be quite cold and almost like a big spiral corridor. The Midtown building feels much warmer and more like a large comfortable living room or hotel floor. Very nice.

    I think the shops are expensive in both places 🙂
